Introduction

History & Facts

  • Commonly known as "Todai" in Japan, the University of Tokyo was founded in 1877.
  • In 1886, Todai was renamed the Imperial University, and later in 1897 it was renamed as Tokyo Imperial University. 
  • Presently, the University of Tokyo comprises of 10 Faculties, 15 Graduate Schools, 11 affiliated research institutes, and 13 University-wide centers. 

 

University Highlights

  • The University was ranked 23rd by the Times Higher Education Ranking and 31st by QS World University Ranking survey conducted in (2014-15).
  • The university offers courses in all academic disciplines at both undergraduate and graduate levels. 
  • All major courses are taught in Japanese, so it is advisable that candidates become familiar with the contours of the language before applying to the university.

Location and Transport

  • University of Tokyo has three campuses, which are Hongo Campus, Sanshiro Pond and Komaba campus. 
  • Being one of the biggest cities in the world, Tokyo has an advanced public transportation system which can be used by students to get around these campuses.

 

Student Facilities and Unions

  • There are 17 students unions actively organizing many different cross-cultural events for university’s international students.
  • The Health Service Centers on Komaba, Honga, and Kashiwa campuses have been specially designed to cater to the needs of the students.
  • The university has excellent sporting amenities which include – football field, squash court, swimming pool, basketball courts, and much more.
